Late last fall we discovered a little preserve in Indiana, but didn't have time to explore it then, so off we went. It's the first time we've walked in the woods in the middle of winter (although technically we're still at the start, aren't we?) and we loved each little glimpse of life we found. The air was filled with bird calls, so we knew we were surrounded, but only saw a dozen or so. We did see this nuthatch who was busy searching for insects in the bark of an old tree.
Since everything else was either dormant or dead, we had to be satisfied with leftovers.
We also found insect hieroglyphs
and tiny mushrooms that seemed to be pulsing with life!
There was something wondrous about the way the bare branches moved against the sky that stimulated our imaginations.
Finally we came to a half-frozen lake.
It was about then we realized that we were half-frozen as well!
Time to run on home for some warm supper near the fire.
Happy New Year to all the nature lovers out there!

Looks lovely, but cold!
